Snapchat FAQ’s

Snapchat has become one of the most popular social media platforms in recent years. Since their launch in 2011, they have gained more than 187 million users worldwide. Aside from disappearing messages, one of their main features, they are also known for their wide range of lens and filters.

On this page, we will be taking a look at some of the most frequently asked questions about the platform.

How do you Change Your Snapchat Username?

Unfortunately, Snapchat doesn’t allow you to change your username. However, you can easily come up with a custom display name. Once it’s set up, your friends will see that name on their app instead of your username.

To set your custom name, go to your profile and tap on the gear icon on the right-hand corner—this will open up your settings. From there, you will be brought to a new screen, one that has “Name” and “Username” on the top. While you won’t be able to change your username, you can change the “Name” field into anything you want. Once you’re done, tap on the green save button.

And you’re done! With that, your custom name will appear in both your chats and stories.

How to Add Friends on Snap

Go to your profile by tapping on the Snapchat icon at the top of the screen. Once you’re there, tap on the “Add Friends” option. You will be brought to the “Add Friends” page. Here, you will be able to add your friends in four different ways.

Add by Username: This is probably the easiest. Simply type in your friend’s username and they will be added.

Add from Address Book: Have a long list of contacts on your phone? This will show you who is using Snapchat. From there, you can choose who to add.

Add by Snapcode: You can also add someone by scanning their Snapcode—this is the yellow square that you often see online. Once the app detects their profile, you will be given the choice to add them as a friend.

Add Nearby: This allows you to add people who are nearby. For this feature, you will have to enable the GPS on your device. After it is activated, Snapchat users that are close by will appear on the screen. Press on the “+” to add them.

How to Delete Your Snapchat Account

To delete a Snapchat account, access their website on a computer. Go to the “Support” page and click on “Account & “Security.” From there, select “Account Information.” You should see an option to “Delete an Account.” Press on it and you will be prompted to log into your account. Enter your details and press on the “Continue” button.

With that, your account will be deactivated. After 30 days of inactivity, it will be deleted. If you login prior to that, your account will be restored. So try your best not to login before then!

What is the Difference Between Live, Story & Discover

Snapchat Live allows you to watch others’ public stories. Submitted by users, this feature includes live entertainment, snaps, and news. You can find it on the “Stories” screen.

Snapchat Discover is a little different in that it is a curated selection of popular stories. You can also find it on the “Stories” screen. To access this page, swipe right on the main screen. The stories will be towards the bottom under “For You.”

A Snapchat story is a photo or video that you post to your account. Once it is posted, it will be visible to your friends. On the flip side, you can view the stories that are posted by your friends.

How to See the Snap Map

Snap Map allows you to see what’s going on in the world. With it, you can even request your friend’s location! Just hold down on their name and select “Request Location.” Alternatively, you can choose to tell them where you are with “Send My Location.”

If you’re using an iOS device, pull down on the camera screen to access the Snap Map. If you’re on Android, pinch your fingers inward on the camera screen.

You can also access the Snap Map by going to map.snapchat.com on your browser.

How to See Friends List

Want to know who you added on Snapchat? You can do so by pulling up the Friends List. First, open up the app. On the camera screen, tap on the lower right-hand corner—there should be a chat bubble there that says “Friends.” Tapping on that will open up the list.

Alternatively, you can swipe right on the main screen to open up the Friends List. Not only will you be able to see your friends’ usernames, but you’ll be able to see their Snap Score as well. From the list, you will be able to send them a snap or chat.

How to Delete Friends on Snapchat

Is your Friends List starting to get a bit long? Perhaps some of your friends have stopped using the app altogether? If so, maybe it’s time to for a purge. Like most platforms, you can easily delete your old friends in a few simple steps.

On the camera screen, tap on the search bar and type in their username. Press enter and a chat will open them. From there, tap on the upper left-hand corner—there should be a “Remove Friend” option. Tap on it and you will be asked to confirm the decision.

Alternatively, you can delete them from your Friend List. Tap on the “Friends” chat bubble on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. Once the list appears, tap on the profile icon of the person whom you want to delete. You will be given a list of options—select “Remove Friend.” That’s all there is to it!

What is a Geofilter and How Does it Work?

Snapchat offers many different filters—geofilters being one of them. What are they? Essentially, they are special filters that you can use on your snaps. There is one catch, though—they are specific to certain locations; that is, you’ll only be able to use the overlays that are available at your location. Over the past few years, many companies have started to use them as a means of advertising.

Geofilters are easy to use. Once you’ve taken a photo or a video, swipe to the right and a list of available geofilters will appear on the screen. Tap on the one you like and it will be applied to your snap. If you want to add additional filters, hold down on the filter and swipe the screen (either to the right or left, depending on what you want to do).

If you want, you can even make your own Geofilter! For instance, many people design them for parties and weddings. Do note, however, that you will need to pay a small amount to be able to use it at an event.

To create a Geofilter, go to create.snapchat.com. Press on “Create Filter” and you’ll be given the option to upload your design. If you don’t have one, you can make one on their website (all the tools that you need will be provided).

From there, you choose the dates and times for your custom Geofilter (i.e. when people will be able to use them. Next, select the location for the filter. When you’re done, it will prompt you for some information before sending you to the payment screen. Processing can take up to a few days depending on busy the people at Snapchat are. So plan your geofilters carefully!

How to Block Someone on Snapchat

Relationships change. In some cases, we might have to block some of our old friends. To do this, tap on the search bar at the top of the camera screen. Type in the username of the person that you want to block.

Click on their profile icon; this will open up a chat with the person. From there, tap on the three horizontal lines at the top left—you should see a “Block” option on the subsequent drop down menu. Upon selecting it, you will be asked to confirm the decision, press on “Block” again. When you’re done, you’ll be asked by Snapchat why you are blocking the person. Select one of the choices and you’re good to go.

Once a person is blocked, they’ll no longer be able to see your stories; they also won’t be able to send you any snaps.

How to Unblock Someone on Snapchat

Blocking someone isn’t permanent. If you ever change your mind, you can unblock them.

To unblock a friend, navigate to your profile—you can do this by tapping the top left-hand corner on the main screen. Once you’re there, press on the gear to access your settings. Scroll down to the bottom and you should see “Blocked” (on top of Log Out). Select it and a list will appear. From there, find the person that you want to unblock and tap on the “X” on the right.

Similar to when you first blocked them, you’ll be asked to confirm your decision. Select “Yes” and the person will be unblocked. With that, they will be able to see your stories again; they’ll also be able to send you messages and snaps.

How to Make Longer Snaps

For several years, you could only record 10-second videos on Snapchat; any longer, and the video would be cut off. In 2017, however, they changed it so that you can extend the video length. More specifically, the update made it so that you can record six consecutive videos (10 seconds x 6 = 60 seconds).

This new feature is extremely easy to use. All you have to do is hold down on the shutter button! Want to record a 30-second long video? Just hold it for 30 seconds! As noted above, the new maximum is 60 seconds.

The resulting video can even be edited. If there’s a clip of 10 seconds that you don’t like, you can delete it by swiping up.

Note: Sometimes the video can lag with longer snaps

How to Screenshot Snapchat Without Them Knowing

We all know that you can save someone’s snap by taking a screenshot. But how can you do it so that the other person isn’t notified? As it turns out, there are several ways that you can go about doing this.

Record With Another Phone

It might not be a technical solution, but it works. Just record the snap with another phone—that way, no notifications will be sent. Seeing as how it might be difficult to take a picture of a one-second snap, it’s probably a better idea to do a video.

Use a Screen Recording Application

You can also “save” the snap by using a screen recorder. Just make sure that the app is opened before opening the snap. Once you’ve opened it, stop the recording. From there, you can just take screenshots of the recorded video. No one will know!

Note: At one point, you could get around the notification by putting your device on airplane mode. This no longer works!

Using Google Assistant on Android

If you have an Android device, you can get Google Assistant to take the screenshot for you. With this method, no notification will be sent to the other party. All you have to do is tell it to “take a screenshot” with the snap open in the app. Afterward, you’ll be given the choice to share or upload the image.

Aside from the above methods, there are various apps out there that allow you to take screenshots without notifications. Just poke around in the app store—they’re there.

How to Unsubscribe on Snapchat

Stories are easier to access if you subscribe to the user. You can do this by tapping and holding down on their story.

There are times, however, when we want to unsubscribe from a featured story. To do this, go to the stories page by swiping left on the main screen. Scroll down to “Subscriptions”—it should be under the featured stories. Find the story that you want to unsubscribe from, tap and hold. A popup will appear; click on the purple “Subscribed” button to unsubscribe. Once you’ve done that, their stories will no longer appear on your feed.

How to Save Videos on Snapchat

Saving Other People’s Videos

The easiest way to save another user’s video is to use a screen recorder. For instance, you can use the iOS screen recorder if you’re using an Apple device. Set it to record before opening the Snapchat video and it will be saved to your device. If your phone doesn’t have a built-in screen recorder, you can use a separate app.

Alternatively, you can record their video by using QuickTime. For this method, you’ll have to connect your phone to your computer. From there, open QuickTime and choose “New Movie Recording.” In the subsequent screen, click on the small down arrow next to the record button—you will be able to select your phone as the recording device. Press record before opening up the Snapchat video. When you’re done, you can stop the recording by pressing on the record button again.

Saving Your Own Video

Saving your own videos is a different story. For one thing, it is much simpler. Once you’ve recorded the video, tap on the download icon on the bottom left-hand corner; this will save the story to your “Photos and Memories”. If you’ve already posted the snap, you can download it by going to your profile.

How to Send Camera Roll Photos on Snapchat

It’s fun to send snaps in real time, but did you know that you can also send pictures and videos from your Camera Roll?

First things first, you’ll want to grant Snapchat access to your Camera Roll. When you’ve done that, open up the app. Tap on the icon at the bottom middle of the screen (underneath the shutter button). A new screen will appear; click on “Camera Roll” at the top right—this will allow you to upload an image (or video) that is already in your camera roll.

Will Someone Know If I’ve Blocked Them?

It depends. While they won’t be notified of the block, they can easily find out with a bit of detective work. For instance, they might be able to tell if they decide to search up your name (they won’t be able to find you if you’ve blocked them). If you guys have chatted recently, your recent conversation would have also disappeared.

How to Tell if You’re Blocked

There are several ways to find out whether or not you’ve been blocked by someone on Snapchat.

Check to See if You Can See Their Snap Score

Normally, you would be able to see someone’s Snap Score on their profile. If you can’t see this number, you are either blocked or deleted by the user.

Check Your Recent Conversations

Open up the app and tap on the “Friends” icon at the bottom left; this will open up your conversations. If you’ve talked with the other person recently, the chat should appear here. If you don’t see it on the list, they might have blocked you.

Search For Their Username

If the other person has blocked you, you won’t be able to find them, even if you type in their username.

Ask a Friend to Search For Their Username

Sometimes, it’s hard to tell whether they’ve blocked you or if they’ve deleted their account. To find out, ask a friend to search for their username. If they show up in the results (and not in yours), you’ve been blocked. If you guys can’t find them, they’ve probably deleted their Snapchat account.

Try Sending Them a Snap

If they’ve blocked you, you won’t be able to send them a snap. You can try to send them something, but it will be stuck on “pending.”

Try to Send Them a Message

If they’ve blocked you, you also won’t be able to send them any messages. You’ll likely get a “tap to try again” error message.

Note: Blocking and deleting are two different things. If they block you, you’ll no longer be able to interact them; you won’t be able to search for their username. If they’ve deleted you, there’s still a chance that you’ll be able to see their snaps and stories (it depends on their privacy settings).

What Does the Gray Arrow Mean?

Normally, if you send someone a snap, a red or purple arrow (blue if it’s a chat) will appear under their name. Sometimes, however, you’ll get a gray arrow. What does this mean?

To put it simply, this is the “pending” arrow. If you see this, it means that you’ve sent an image or video to someone who has not yet accepted your friend request. Alternatively, the request might have expired or was denied. In any case, they have not seen the snap.
