How To Use Snapchat Lenses

There’s no doubt that social media has changed the way society works. For one thing, it has changed the way that we communicate; nowadays, we can easily get in touch with our friends with the press of a button. If anything, it has become much easier to nurture relationships.

Some of the most popular platforms today include Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, and YouTube. While they all have different themes, they have one thing in common—they allow you to interact with others with the press of a button. As you can imagine, this has greatly impacted the way we communicate with one another. After all, contacting someone is just a few clicks away!

Snapchat is another one of these platforms. Launched in 2011, the messaging app is perhaps best known for allowing users to send disappearing photos and videos. Not only that, but you can share chronological content using the “Stories” feature as well. Available for Android and iOS devices, the app has become one of the most popular mobile-only platforms over the past few years. As of 2018, Snapchat has more than 180 million daily active users.

What are Snapchat Lenses?

As you might already know, snaps can be customized with various stickers and objects. Aside from filters, which are essentially static overlays, there are lenses, which allow you to add animated effects to your selfies. Using face detection technology, the feature allows you to add real-time effects to photos and videos. For instance, you can use it to give yourself bunny ears or a puppy face. If anything, lenses have become one of the main highlights of Snapchat.

In 2017, Snapchat launched a second type of lens called “World Lenses.” Even more versatile, it allows users to enhance their photos using augmented reality technology—that is, to integrate 3D rendered elements such as animated characters and objects into the screen.

How to Use Snapchat Lenses

There are two different types of lenses on Snapchat—Face lens, which uses face detection technology, and World Lens, which allow you to “reimagine the world around you.” Let’s take a look at you can use them on the app.

How to Use Face Lenses

First things first, you’ll want to open the app. Once you’ve done that, your phone’s front-facing camera should turn on. With your face on the screen, tap and hold on your face. When you do that, a grid should appear, as well as some icons on the bottom—these are the different “Lenses” that you can use on your image.

Note: Some Snapchat lenses are only available for a short period of time. If there are a few that you like, be sure to snap a few photos with them while you still can! Unfortunately, you never know when they will disappear.

Depending on the lenses that you’ve picked, you might have to do certain things such as open your mouth to get the full effect. There are also lenses that you can use on videos. For instance, some will change your voice when you’re speaking. Unless you want to be stared at though, it’s probably a good idea not to experiment with it when you’re in public.

After taking the photo, you can set a time limit. This determines how long the other person will be able to view your image.

Face Swapping

Towards the end of the list, there should be an icon that shows two faces. This is one of Snapchat’s most popular features—Face Swap. As implied by its name, this Face Lenses allows you to swap faces with someone that is standing next to you. Alternatively, you can also use it on old photos that you have in your camera roll. Heck, you can even use it on your pets!

Once you’ve taken the picture, several icons should appear on the right-hand side. If you want, you can use them to add stickers, text, or even a second filter! The possibilities are endless really, you just have to play around with the different options.

How to Use World Lenses

Want to take your snaps to the next level? If so, why not give their World Lenses a try? Unlike the Face Lenses, these are not intended for selfies. Instead, they are meant to be used with your phone’s rear-facing camera. By taking a photo of your surroundings, you’ll be able to use their augmented reality feature to add 3D objects into such as flowers, bubbles, and sparkles, into the environment.

Note: If you’re coming back to Snapchat after a while, you might have to update the app first. To do so, just head on over to the Google Play Store or iTunes App Store.

To get started, open the app. From there, click on the camera change icon on the top right-hand side to use the rear-facing camera. Next, press down anywhere on the screen and you should see the different World Lenses as a row of icons on the bottom. Scroll through the options and pick one to add to your surroundings; the augmented reality overlay should be added the second you click on the icon.

While some of the lenses transform the environment, others can be moved and played around with on the screen. To do this, just drag and drop. The object will remain in place, even if the area is off camera. If you want, you can fiddle around with the depth of field by pinching it larger or smaller. Once you’re happy with the results, you can press and hold down on the center button to begin filming. As you move the camera, you should be able to see the object from different angles.

Creating Your Own Snapchat Lenses

Want to make your own Snapchat lens? It’s entirely possible—you just have to use some type of augmented reality software, such as Lens Studio. Released in 2017, the tool gives you the ability to create, publish, and share different lenses. While there are various templates that you can use, you can easily make it from scratch if you know what you’re doing.

Unlocking New Snapchat Lenses

You can unlock a new World or Face Lens if you come across a Snapcode with a circle in the middle. To get started, you just have to scan the code! If you want, you can even share it with your friends so that they can use it too.
